Upcoming Volunteering Opportunities

Youth members have two final opportunities to perform service this season for St. James.

Sat, June 1: St. James Work Party

Full Details Here

The congregation of St. James is holding a restoration/refurbishing work party. This is a chance for youth to earn 3 of the 4 hours of volunteering required for the season that’s about to end.

Gather at 10 am in the sanctuary and give us a hand in making our church more beautiful.

Thu, June 6: Women’s Meal

Full Details Here

Girls and women in the t/c are welcome to help with the women’s meal sponsored by St. James. We’ll be helping on Thursday, June 6, 4-6 pm. The meal is at Hope Fellowship Church (just down Beech street from St. James).

This counts as volunteer service to St. James. Anyone interested should contact Robin Bonner.

Gay Youth Approved at a National Level

Michelle Holmes reports that the BSA national council has voted to allow gay youth to openly participate in scouting. This replaces an informal “don’t ask/don’t tell” policy that forced youth to conceal a central aspect of their identity.

The struggle is not over. National policy continues to forbid gay adults from serving as leaders. Advocates even now are vowing to continue to push for further reforms.

We of Troop/Crew 56 remain committed to a vision of 21st Century scouting that embraces all people, gay or straight, as youth and as leaders.
